Tax Return

A tax return takes careful planning. Throughout the year the conscientious tax payer will save important documents and keep separate files for federal income taxes and state income taxes. Once it is time to actually prepare the return there are several items that every tax payer must have. W-2 statements from any jobs held during the year, 1099s, proof of alimony or jury duty payments, retirement accounts, investment and bank statements, (dividend, year end statements), social security statements, income expenses for rental property, and income and expenses if self-employed. This may seem a little overwhelming to someone who has not been preparing during the year but it is doable. Close to tax time banks and brokerage houses send out end of year statements with needed information. This is also the time when tax payers receive W-2s. Many proofs of payments can be accessed over the internet. Other documents may be needed depending on a person's age, state of health, income, or job. For example, numerous health care expenses are deductable which helps families experiencing major illness. Use this year of last minute collecting to make a resolution — next year will be a new year and you will organize tax return information throughout the entire year.
