Transportation Expenses

Some, but not all, transportation expenses are deductible. The Internal Revenue Service has detailed rules defining the methods to use to determine if an expense is deductible. Transportation expenses refer to the costs association with traveling via various modes including rail, air and taxi, and the cost of driving and maintaining your car. This expense category deals with the cost of getting from one workplace to another workplace while conducting business; getting to business meetings; traveling between work locations; and travelling to visit customers. You cannot deduct the cost of traveling from home to work and back when you are not self-employed. This expense category does not include the cost of travelling away from home overnight. Some allowable transportation expenses include parking fees, additional costs associated with hauling tools, expense of traveling from a home office to another work location, and mileage deductions for cars used for business purposes.
