Tax Exempt Status for Church

Across the country, there is a heated debate about immigration and tax law. Due to the heightened awareness, some groups are starting to question whether churches that violate the laws by harboring illegal immigrants should lose the tax free status for church benefits that non profit organizations receive.

Do you need a lawyer to help you in defending the tax free status for a church? Contact a taxation lawyer to help defend the tax free status for a church today.

Some of the reasons that your organization may need to hire a tax lawyer for are:

  • Allegations of tax fraud
  • Money laundering
  • Illegal contributions
  • Falsification of tax records
  • Tax evasion

In a recent event revolving around an illegal immigrant in Long Beach, Ca,
The immigrant had sought refuge from authorities by hiding out in churches aided by the churches leaders. Though the church may have a moral obligation to help those that are in need, it remains a clear violation of US law to harbor those that are violating the law. The age old debate about the separation of church and state comes back to the surface, to stir up controversy as to the level of immunity that the church a whole should have from the state and federal laws.

The current senate immigration bill is being highly criticized primarily for the overwhelming tax cost that would result if the bill is passed. The congressional budget office projects that in just the first ten years, the expense for the earned income tax credit will be approximately $20 billion. Moreover, the previous year’s bill required that illegal aliens prove that they had made payments for the past five years in order to receive amnesty, which was to be paid at the time of applying for a green card. However, at that time, proof of payment is only required for Federal taxes that were incurred for the period that the alien worked on a Z visa.

Lastly, the bill offers free, taxpayer funded legal services for those that have been working as illegally in agriculture. It is apparent that the new bill will not only cost the American public an enormous amount of money, but will also provide an unfair advantage to immigrants to take advantage of the system and in turn receive a greater tax advantage than the current tax paying citizen.

The average annual income in 1913 was $800.

Back in 1913 tax rates ranged from one to seven percent on incomes above $3,000. This tax rate doesn't sound like much until you consider the average annual income for the time.
